Installation History

The H.E.Ai.D. was originally created as “Steve the Robot H.E.Ai.D.”, a large scale art installation funded by an art grant from Burning Man in 2009.  The H.E.Ai.D. has evolved into a platform for interactive experiences and has now appeared at several art shows and events, playing different interactive compositions, or “mind sets“.

May, 2010.   The H.E.Ai.D.  Web 2.0 Expo.

The H.E.Ai.D. will be installed in the Moscone exhibition center during the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.  We plan to play several different interactive mind sets to hightlight it’s flexibility as a platform for creating interactive experiences, including location-activated sound sample sets created by member DJs, and motion-based, dynamically generated musical compositions created by music artist Chris Overstreet.  The projection will show outlines of participants in the playspace as seen by the vision system, and layer over Twitter messages that include the hashtags #w2e #heaid.

January, 2010.   A Storm in the H.E.Ai.D.  Winter Lights art exhibit at Vermillion.   16′w x 16′h.

As a part of an art show themed with self-illuminated art, the H.E.Ai.D. was installed on the ceiling and lasers were projected onto the floor.   The mind set was a motion-based, dynamically generated music composition and the laser system cycled through several interactive patterns (tracing, mirroring, expanding contracting).   A video projection showed participants the outline of their shapes as seen by the camera system.  See video:

October, 2009.  A Ghost in the H.E.Ai.D.  Hive-mind Halloween.

The H.E.Ai.D. box was suspended 35 feet in the air using a boom lift in the middle of the party.  Mind sets included synchronized, location-activated samples created by DJs.

November, 2009.   Steve the Robot H.E.Ai.D.  Burning Man funded project.  25’w x 35’h

The H.E.Ai.D. was installed in a 35 foot free standing structure shaped to look like a giant robot head.  Animated eyes were projected onto two screens.  Up to 30 people could interact in the playspace at a time.  “Mind sets” included dynamically generated music and location activated sound samples. Video below shows the making of Steve.

August 2009.  Mad in the H.E.Ai.D, at Mad in the H.E.Ai.D.  fundraising event.  20’w x 35’h

The H.E.Ai.D. was suspended 35 feet in the air using a boom lift, over a playspace stage on the ground.  Animated eyes were projected onto the wall.   Mind sets included both location-activated sound samples created by member DJs, and a spoken poetry mind set based on excerpts from books about the theory of mind.

July 2009.  Steve the Robot H.E.Ai.D.  Critical Massive, funded project.   25’w x 35’h

The H.E.Ai.D. was installed in a 35 foot free standing structure shaped to look like a giant robot head at Critical Massive.  Animated eyes were projected onto two screens.  Up to 30 people could interact in the playspace at a time.  Mind sets included location activated sound sample sets created by member DJs, a spoken poetry mind set based on excerpts from books about the theory of mind, and a “Star Wars” set with motion-activated light saber sounds so that people could simulate battle scenes.
